Theme 3 - Engaging youth in transport

Introduction

A number of different service models have been developed in recent years for young persons’ transport. But are they meeting their objectives and how do we know what young people think? It is important that young people’s voices help shape  government policies and are heard in the debate about how public and community services will be delivered locally. Delegates attending sessions in this theme will explore how we actively engage young people in the design and governance of transport to meet their needs. This theme particularly welcomes input and attendance by young people and youth organisations.

Session 3A – Transport challenges for young people

Tuesday 15 March, 10:00 to 10:45

The first session in this theme will, with the help of young people from around the UK, consider what their transport challenges are today.  Importantly, we will also look at the transport barriers impacting on young people’s lives. We will consider some of the solutions that have been developed to date and ask what solutions young people have come up with and discuss how community transport can embrace these.

Session 3B – Involving young people in transport governance

Tuesday 15 March, 11:15 to 12:00

The technical design of transport services that will meet the needs of young people is only part of the story.  It is important that we involve young people in governance too, and that we embrace their contribution in civil society organisations.  This will also have the benefit of bringing on the next generation of community transport staff and trustees.  We will discuss training in trusteeship for young people and how meetings can be appropriately inclusive for younger members. Speakers will include both new and experienced community transport stakeholders and the session will include examples of young people working at trustee level in the wider third sector.

Session 3C – Youth transport: the next 25 years?

Tuesday 15 March, 12:45 to 13:30

Whatever definition you choose to use for a ‘young person’ virtually all young people were been born during the 25 years since the inception of the CTA in its current form.  Many community transport organisations know how far we have come in that time in developing transport services for young people.  But as today’s young people move on to take the baton from existing operators, how will they develop services for the coming generations?  This session will give you the chance to think and talk about what the future of community transport services will need to look like to ensure the needs of young people are continually met. By planning for generational changes community transport can ensure it strives to provide for tomorrow’s youth.

Session 3D – Meeting the needs of young travellers

Tuesday 15 March, 14:15 to 15:00

Using examples of young people’s experiences, attitudes and ideas for improving transport this session will discuss how to explore realistic (short-medium) term options for embracing those suggestions.. This discussion will review the needs of younger people in urban and rural areas and how best to respond to the issues raised.. The discussion will also talk about how to collect information from younger people and to include a youth perspective in service planning.

Session 3E – Youth transport in the UK, Europe and the USA

Tuesday 15 March, 15:30 to 16:15

What happens in other parts of the world?  In this session, international contributors will provide an opportunity to compare their practice with transport delivery in the UK. Do young people get involved in transport provision?  Or do they just rely on public transport?  We will look at who meets their needs, whether they can influence services and if there are any interesting examples which we can learn from.
